Comparatives and Superlatives

We use comparatives to compare two people, things, or places. We use superlatives to compare three or more.

In this lesson, we use them to talk about fashion and Formula 1.

1) Comparative form

Short adjectives

For most short adjectives, add -er:

  • fast → faster
  • bright → brighter
  • stylish → more stylish? No — stylish is a longer adjective, so we use more stylish.
Structure:

subject + be + comparative adjective + than + noun/pronoun

Long adjectives

For longer adjectives, use more + adjective:

  • comfortable → more comfortable
  • expensive → more expensive
  • fashionable → more fashionable

Examples

  • This team jacket is more stylish than last season’s one.
  • The new race suit is safer than the old design.
  • These shoes are more comfortable than my trainers.
  • The red helmet looks brighter than the black one.

2) Superlative form

We use superlatives to say something is number one in a group.

Short adjectives

Add -est:

  • fast → fastest
  • bright → brightest
  • cheap → cheapest

Long adjectives

Use the most + adjective:

  • comfortable → the most comfortable
  • expensive → the most expensive
  • stylish → the most stylish
Structure:

subject + be + the + superlative adjective + in/of + group

Examples

  • Lewis’s helmet design is the brightest in the paddock.
  • This limited-edition cap is the most expensive item in the shop.
  • That outfit is the most stylish of all the fan looks.
  • The podium celebration was the most exciting moment of the race.

3) Irregular forms

Some adjectives are irregular:

  • good → better → best
  • bad → worse → worst
  • far → farther/further → farthest/furthest

Examples

  • This sponsor logo looks better than the old one.
  • The new team kit is the best in the pit lane.
  • The old design was worse than the new one.

4) Common adjectives in this lesson

  • stylish → more stylish / the most stylish
  • comfortable → more comfortable / the most comfortable
  • expensive → more expensive / the most expensive
  • bright → brighter / the brightest
  • good → better / the best
  • fast → faster / the fastest

5) Common mistakes

Mistake 1: Using more with short adjectives

❌ This car is more fast than that one.

✅ This car is faster than that one.

Mistake 2: Forgetting the with superlatives

❌ This is most stylish jacket.

✅ This is the most stylish jacket.

Mistake 3: Forgetting than in comparatives

❌ The new outfit is more stylish the old one.

✅ The new outfit is more stylish than the old one.

Mistake 4: Using the wrong irregular form

❌ This cap is gooder than that one.

✅ This cap is better than that one.

6) Quick summary

  • Use comparatives for two things: faster, more stylish, better
  • Use superlatives for three or more: fastest, the most stylish, the best
  • Use than with comparatives
  • Use the with superlatives

More examples

  • The team’s new uniforms are more modern than the old ones.
  • This streetwear look is the coolest in the fan zone.
  • The black shoes are more practical than the white ones.
  • That luxury watch is the most expensive item on the table.

Fashion and Formula 1

Formula 1 is not only about speed. It is also about image, style, and brand identity. At many races, fans wear team shirts, caps, and jackets to show support. Drivers and team members also wear clothing with sponsor logos, so the team looks professional and easy to recognise.

Fashion is important because it helps create a strong brand image. A stylish race suit, a modern team kit, or a limited-edition cap can make a team look more exciting. Fans often buy merchandise because they want to feel part of the sport and support their favourite driver. Some items are practical, but others are mainly about style.

Today, F1 fashion is often more fashionable than before. Luxury brands work with teams, and streetwear is popular in the paddock. For many people, the event is more than a race — it is also a place to see trends, take photos, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Grammar note: Comparatives and superlatives

We use comparatives to compare two things and superlatives to compare one thing with a group.

  • This jacket is more stylish than that one.
  • This cap is cheaper than the limited-edition version.
  • The new team kit is the most modern in the paddock.
  • That helmet design is the brightest of all.

Common mistake

Do not say "more better" or "stylisher". Use better or more stylish.
