3. Grammar

Past Simple and Past Continuous with Time Expressions

1) Past simple

We use the past simple for finished actions in the past.

Form: subject + past verb

  • I left the notebook on the desk.
  • The storm started at 3 p.m.
  • They found a clue in the market.

2) Past continuous

We use the past continuous for actions that were in progress in the past.

Form: subject + was / were + verb -ing

  • Youssef was working at the museum.
  • The visitors were walking through the hotel.
  • It was getting darker in the afternoon.

3) Past simple + past continuous

We often use both tenses together.

  • While Youssef was checking the desk, the sandstorm began.
  • The journalist was taking notes when the guide arrived.
  • At 4 p.m., people were running outside because the wind got stronger.

4) Time expressions

These words help show when something happened:

  • while
  • when
  • at 3 p.m.
  • that morning
  • during the storm
  • at the same time

7) Remember

Use past continuous for the longer background action. Use past simple for the shorter action that happened in the story.

Context

You are in 1926 Cairo, during a hot afternoon near Hotel Shepheard. The city is busy, and a mystery is beginning.

Arrival at the hotel

When the time machine stopped, the air was warm and dry. Elena opened the door and looked at the street. Cars moved slowly, and a man in a light suit stood near the hotel entrance. Inside the lobby, travelers were talking quietly, and a young museum assistant named Youssef was waiting near the front desk.

He looked worried. "I left something important here," he said. "My notebook had notes for an excavation."

At that moment, a strong wind blew through the open doors. Papers moved across the floor. A guide pointed toward the market street and said that a collector had been asking questions earlier. On the desk, Elena saw a small mark in the dust and a torn corner of paper. It was the first clue.

Youssef said the notebook might help protect the directions to an ancient tomb. Elena wrote down the time, the place, and the names she heard. The team needed to move fast before the trail disappeared.
